We are extremely honoured to have the opportunity to find a new custodian of arguably the most Historic Home in Scarborough. Steeped in history this intriguing grade II star listed period property dates back some 700 years old and was formally The Three Mariners Inn underwent a sensitive restoration less than 20 years ago by the current owners. The deceptively spacious accommodation is spread over four floors and is just a minutes walk from the beach and the harbour and consists; entrance hall with stairs to the lower ground floor with large fitted kitchen/dining room with antique cooking range fireplace, utility room, on the first floor, parlour room with inglenook fireplace and panelled walls, snug with original bar still in place and open fireplace. On the first floor, master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, bedroom two with fireplace, priest hole and shower room. On the second floor is a large open plan room, ideal as a hobby room/office or bedroom. Some rooms offer partial views to the harbour. Scarborough was one of the first spa towns, following the discovery of mineral springs in the 1620s, with the added benefit of sea bathing. The elegant terrace of The Esplanade was laid out in the 1840s on the south cliff, with The Crown Hotel as its centre-piece. The railway arrived in 1845 and still provides a regular direct cross-country service to York, Manchester and Liverpool. Change at York for the East Coast main line service. Scarborough's attractions are manifold and include: two spectacular sandy beaches, extensive twelfth century castle ruins, fishing harbour and lighthouse. The town is well served with amenities and lies on the eastern boundary of the North York Moors National Park. Culturally, Scarborough is the home of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, where Sir Alan Ayckbourn was for many years the resident director. County cricket is played in the town in summer.

Arguably the earliest licensed premises in Scarborough The Three Mariners is certainly one of the oldest buildings in town. In the west gable end you can see an A shaped frame in massive timbers with a central post known as a crown post. This timber frame dates from the 15th century. If you look carefully you can see that many of the timbers have the roman numeral V carved into them; this is the frame number. Frames numbered VI and VII were found within the building when it was being restored a few years ago. The Quay Street facade was re-fronted in brick in the 17th century in a style known as Artisan Mannerism. The building was altered again in the 18th century when the ground floor windows were replaced by vertical sliding sashes and the nice doorcase and door were installed. Because of the frame numbering, we now know that The Three Mariners is part of a much larger building. The former Dog & Duck, another 15th century timber framed building just along the street, is thought to be part of the same building but the section between the two was removed many years ago. The Three Mariners was once known as The Blockmaker's Arms', a name which suggests an association with the great shipbuilding era of later years. During Victorian times, it was a favoured haunt for the many artists who found the nearby harbour area an endless source of inspiration.
